Whitfield Diffie, real name Bailey Whitfield 'Whit' Diffie, was born on June 5th, 1944 in Washington, D.C. His parents are Bailey Wallys Diffie, a professor of history at the City college of New York, and Justine Louise Whitfield, a writer. Whitfield himself is an American Cryptographer, someone who studies the techniques of codes and cipher systems. He, Ralph Merkle, and Martin Hellman were the pioneers of public-key cryptography. Diffie and Hellman introduced a new method of distributing cryptographic keys which became known as the Diffie-Hellman key exchange.
